Monastery of Abuna Hara Dengeel

The Monastery of Abuna Hara Dengeel has acquired a 10-acre property in Crandall, Texas. Your gift will help develop our permanent spiritual and community campus, beginning with Phase I improvements and continuing with future construction as funding becomes available.

Vision & Sanctuary

Our 10-acre property in Crandall will become a permanent, worship-centered campus for prayer, liturgy, hospitality, spiritual formation, and community life. With the land secured, we are preparing the site for responsible, phased development.

Sanctuary

At the heart of the Monastery of Abuna Hara Dengeel is a sacred vision: a permanent Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo sanctuary dedicated to worship, prayer, the Divine Liturgy, and the preservation of our ancient faith and traditions. Until the permanent sanctuary is completed, development will proceed in phases so that regular worship and spiritual life can grow on the property.

Spaces & Stillness

The monastery is envisioned as a peaceful place of prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal. The 10-acre property will provide spaces where clergy, monastics, families, elders, youth, pilgrims, and visitors can step away from the pressures of daily life and experience worship, contemplation, fellowship, and the quiet beauty of a monastery environment.

Community Pulse

Fundraising supports Phase I property improvements, professional planning, essential infrastructure, and future construction as resources become available.

Planning Timeline

These are the major phases planned for development of the monastery's acquired 10-acre property.

  1. Renovate and extend the existing garage to create a temporary 250-300-seat Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo worship space, including the appropriate sacred/altar area, so regular worship and monastery services can begin.

  2. Complete architectural planning, engineering, permitting, utility planning, site preparation, and infrastructure needed for development of the permanent monastery campus.

  3. Construct the permanent Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo church and monastery as the spiritual center of the campus.

  4. Develop monks’ residences, senior care facilities, guest accommodations, meeting and educational spaces, and supporting campus facilities.

  5. Develop youth theological and AI/technology learning programs, farming and beekeeping activities for sustainability, and the planned burial area. Development will proceed according to funding and available resources.
